Renfe introduces +Renfe&tú contactless card on Cartagena-Los Nietos Cercanías line
A new rechargeable smart card aims to streamline train access and offer flexible ticketing options
Renfe has launched its ‘+Renfe&tú’ contactless card service on the Cartagena-Los Nietos cercanías line, effective from June 18. According to a statement from the railway operator, the new system is designed to simplify access to local trains and modernise fare collection for passengers travelling on this metric gauge line.
The +Renfe&tú card, which closely resembles a standard credit card, is embedded with an electronic chip that can store a variety of suburban train tickets. Passengers can now use these cards to board trains without handling paper tickets, making for a quicker and more convenient travel experience.
There are two versions of the card available: personalised and non-personalised. Both are rechargeable and have no expiry date.
Personalised +Renfe&tú card for Cartagena cercanías travel
The personalised card is issued in the passenger’s name and requires supporting documentation, including a photocopy of a DNI, NIE or passport, a photograph and any documents verifying entitlement to discounts.
It can be obtained from the ticket office at Cartagena station, through on-duty staff, or online at www.renfe.com. This version supports a wide range of ticket types, including singles, returns, season tickets, bonotren and discounted fares such as those for Tarjeta Dorada and large families. It is free of charge until August 31, 2025, after which it will cost €2.
Non-personalised +Renfe&tú card for Cartagena cercanías travel
The non-personalised card, which costs €1, is also rechargeable and reusable. It can be used for single and return tickets as well as bonotren, but not for named or discounted fares. It is available from the ticket office, vending machines, and on board the train.
However, passengers eligible for discounts who are making brief visits and cannot apply for a personalised card may load these fares onto a non-personalised card, which will then remain valid for seven days from the date of purchase.
Renfe has highlighted that its +Renfe&tú card enhances travel reliability, allows faster boarding and offers a practical solution in case of loss, since the card can be replaced without losing the stored value.
