Renewal of the lighting for Caravaca de la Cruz castle
The work is made possible thanks to an investment of 200,000 euros
The Caravaca de la Cruz castle, with its walled enclosure and Royal Basilica of the Vera Cruz, will renew its ornamental lighting with the use of modern technologies. The work which will cost 200,000 euros will be fully funded by the Iberdrola España Foundation.
The Mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, José Francisco García, and the President of the Iberdrola Spain Foundation, Fernando García, have signed the collaboration agreement that will allow the development of this project over the next few months.
The Mayor said, “This action will allow Caravaca to continue moving towards a better future, just in the year in which we celebrate the most important religious event in our country in 2024, the Jubilee Year of Caravaca de la Cruz.”
He continued, “We are taking another step towards one of the main objectives of this City Council, which is the conservation, enhancement and protection of the historical and artistic heritage of Caravaca.”
The President of the Iberdrola Spain Foundation said, “With this artistic and sustainable lighting we help to enhance a monument of great architectural and historical value and contribute to all citizens and visitors being able to enjoy all its beauty.”
Prior to signing the agreement, the architect of the Santa María la Real Foundation, Jesús Castillo, has presented details of the project, which includes the installation of different types of warm light projectors and LED technology.
The lighting design is respectful of the unique elements that make up the architectural complex, the landscape and its integration with the city's urban centre.
The construction of the Basilica of La Vera began in 1617, based on designs by the architect Friar Alberto de la Madre de Dios and was completed in 1703. It has a Latin cross plan and, in contrast to the austerity of the complex, its main façade stands out as one of the best examples of Baroque in the region. It was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument in 1944.
On February 2, 2008, it became a Minor Basilica by decree of Pope Benedict XVI. Since 2003, every seven years, it has the privilege of celebrating a Jubilee Year, which only occurs in four other places in the world: Jerusalem, Rome, Santiago de Compostela and Santo Toribio de Liébana.
