ARCHIVED - Public praised for stopping illegal street sale of puppies in Torrevieja
Residents alerted police to the illegal sale of four puppies in the Vega Baja town, Alicante
Local Police and Torrevieja Emergencias have praised the public for preventing the illegal sale of four puppies displayed on a beach promenade cooped up in small carrier cases.
"Thanks to public cooperation this morning (June 16), the street sale of four puppies has been detected on Paseo Juan Aparicio. Officers from the Environment and Animal Protection Unit have begun the process of identifying those involved and reported all the facts to Torrevieja police," the emergency service posted on Facebook.
The puppies have been taken to a veterinary centre for examination, according to the Local Police, which added: "We would like to remind you that this is totally prohibited by our Animal Ownership Ordinance, as stated in Article 67, section 3-H.”
A main measure of Spain's new Animal Protection Law is that pets/domestic animals are no longer considered objects in legal terms and the legislation is crystal clear about what should and should not be done when it comes to caring for animals.
