ARCHIVED - Probe into illegal puppy farm breeding potentially dangerous dogs in Elche
Police located the unauthorised kennels in Elche's Saladas district in Alicante province

Local Police in Elche are investigating an illegal puppy farm which has allegedly been breeding and selling potentially dangerous dogs without authorisation and in violation of urban planning regulations.
An investigation began after the Urban and Environment Unit (UMA) became aware of posts advertising the sale of pedigree dogs in Elche on a number of social media networks. The exact breed has not been specified.
After several weeks of investigation in collaboration with a number of animal associations and with assistance from local residents, officers managed to locate the kennels to a farm in the Saladas district.
An inspection was carried out, and whilst the puppies were all in "good health" with a "pedigree quality genealogical line", the kennel owners didn't have the obligatory civil liability insurance, zoological declaration (required when there are more than five animals) or a certificate of urban compatibility. All of these documents are necessary to be able to carry out this type of commercial activity.
Failure to provide these documents equates to illegal activity and can result in fines of between 6,000 and 18,000 euros, the closure of the premises for a maximum period of five years and a ban on the purchase of animals for between 12 months and 10 years.
The UMA has also stressed that irregular kennels have an unfair advantage over those who comply with the regulations and represent a risk for the consumer, "as they do not have the guarantees or insurance for this type of purchase".
