ARCHIVED - Pressure on Alicante clinics drops as Covid consultations fall 30 per cent
Health centres in Alicante province are recovering face-to-face appointments, though there are still delays
Health centres have borne the brunt of the sixth wave of the pandemic in Alicante province, but are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel with Covid consultations falling by up to 30% in the last week.
"A few weeks ago we had to call an average of 300 patients every day who, after testing positive for Covid, contacted their local health centre. Today we are only having to make around 50 due to a drop in incidence," said one doctor at practice in Alicante city on Tuesday February 1.
For the first time since the start of the sixth wave, the province's 14-day cumulative incidence rate fell on Tuesday, to 3,677.54 cases per 100,000 people.
"This drop in incidence is allowing health centres to recover face-to-face appointments, which had been reduced to a minimum by attending to emerging cases of coronavirus by telephone and managing sick leave," added the doctor.
Handling Covid cases has reportedly taken up 90% of GPs' time in recent weeks, and in some departments, such as the Hospital de Sant Joan, other specialists such as surgeons and ophthalmologists were called in to help with the workload and cover sick leave.
Other indicators the situation is "normalising" is that these specialists have already returned to their usual posts, and the number of antigen and PCR tests being carried out in the health centres has fallen by 7%.
But experts warn delays can still be expected for the moment as clinics play catch-up, with some GPs unable to offer appointments for at least 15 days.
