Petrol and diesel prices in Spain continue to skyrocket
Filling a tank of unleaded in Spain now costs more than 92 euros

At the height of the summer, when holidaying drivers typically spend most time on the road, the price of petrol and diesel continues to mark its upward trajectory, and a litre of unleaded in Spain is now far more expensive than when the government’s 20 cent discount was in play.
Petrol has racked up five consecutive weeks of price increases and a fill for an average 55-litre tank will now cost 92.40 euros, which is a substantial 5.3% cost hike compared to June 19, the official start of the summer. Diesel, while still the cheaper of the two fuels, has fared even worse: a full tank has skyrocketed by 8.8% during this period to 85.36 euros.
This development is a major setback for drivers, who watched prices fall in the first week of July and anticipated a cheaper motoring summer. Since then, however, the only way has been up and fuel is pricier than this time last year, when the 20 cent bonus was still being applied.
The difference is even more dramatic when we look at the first week of 2023. Compared to then, petrol has risen by just shy of 21.5% and diesel has become 6.37% more expensive. Of course, this is nothing compared to the prices drivers had to endure in June last year, when fuel costs reached the highest figures of all time and prompted the government’s discount in the first place.
On the other hand, and despite the seemingly endless increases, the price of unleaded 95 in Spain remains below the average for the European Union, which is sitting at 1.801 euros per litre.
In the case of diesel, the price in Spain is also lower than the EU average, which is 1,689 euros.
