Pedestrian and cycle path to be built under the A-30 Murcia
One of the sections of the new underpass will connect Myrtea shopping centre and the University of Murcia

Murcia's Regional Government has provisionally green-lighted a project to create a cycle and pedestrian path connecting the greenway routes of the Northwest region as they pass under the A-30 motorway.
The 1.3 million euro scheme will soon be put out for public consultation, according to the Ministry of Transport, and aims to "improve the mobility of vulnerable users in this area".
"Currently, the connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists between municipalities, the University of Murcia and the Northwest greenway is reduced due to the A-30. This road creates a barrier effect that hinders the flow of traffic and connectivity," said the Ministry in a statement.
Provided final approval is granted as expected, the project will be carried out in two sections. The first is 490 metres long and will connect Myrtea shopping centre and the University of Murcia, crossing Avenida Severo Ochoa to connect with CalleTorre del Obispo, passing under the A-30 motorway viaduct. Finally, it will connect to the Espinardo campus cycle route through the area known as the University Information Service.
The second section is 725 metres long and provides continuity to the current Northwest greenway, from its end point located inside the Espinardo campus on Avenida Pío Baroja until it connects with section 1.
Although the focus is on access for non-vehicle users, two car parks will also be built as part of the scheme, both located next to section 1 of the route, and each offering a dozen spaces.
The work will involve significant "demolition and dismantling", said the Ministry, with excavation and levelling of earthworks, new paving and road surfaces, drainage upgrade, replacement signposting and signalling; lighting and landscaping of green areas to be carried out.
The underpass pathway is included in the region's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR), which has earmarked up to 659 million euros of European Next Generation funds to modernise more than 80 tunnels, enhance the protection of wildlife and vulnerable users, and promote sustainability, energy efficiency and action against noise in the State Road Network.
