ARCHIVED - Passenger levels at Alicante-Elche Airport 40 per cent down on September 2019
909,985 travellers passed through the Costa Blanca airport last month
Airport traffic is the main indicator of how international tourism is shaping up and recovering from the pandemic, and national data released by Aena shows 16.31 million passengers passed through airports within its network in September, down 40% on the same month in 2019.
However, the figures also show that whilst Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández was the fifth busiest airport in Spain in terms of travellers, it has been one of the slowest to recover from the pandemic when it comes to air traffic.
The airport registered 7,422 aircraft movements last month, 26.1% less than during September 2019, and 909,985 passengers, a drop of 41.4% on the same period.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas had the highest number of travellers, with 2.84 million (49% less than in September 2019), followed by Barcelona-El Prat, with 2.63 million (down 48.4%), and Palma de Mallorca, with 2.31 million (down 38.8%).
They were followed by Malaga, with 1.34 million (33.9% less); and Alicante, with almost 910,000 passengers.
But Alicante features lower down on the list when it comes to flight frequencies. Once again, Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas tops the list with 22,946 operations (down 38% on September 2019), with Alicante-Elche ranking seventh.
The lack of UK flights has undoubtedly held back the recovery of the Costa Blanca airport, but Aena data does show there has been a steady increase in passengers flying into or out of Alicante airport over the last three months.
