ARCHIVED - Over 6,000 new cases in past 24 hours: Murcia Covid update
Murcia reported five fatalities in the last day, including two people in their 50s
As the number of daily Covid cases reaches over 6,000 once again in the Region of Murcia, the Health authorities are redoubling vaccination efforts by opening booster jab appointments to everyone over the age of 18 and urging anyone who hasn’t yet done so to get vaccinated.
On a national level, Spain has reported a drop in the country’s incidence rate for the first time since November, but Murcia’s 14-day cumulative incidence has risen by 100 points in the past 24 hours leading to uncertainty about when the sixth wave will finally peak.
New cases
Although the 6,053 cases reported in Wednesday’s update are slightly lower than the previous day’s figure (7,291), daily cases are still not showing a definite downward trend in the Region.
Active cases
The number of active cases has decreased from 44,774 to 43,846 since the previous update, of whom 43,236 are in self-isolation.
Hospitalisations
Pressure on hospitals and healthcare workers is increasing, especially as the Region of Murcia has the fourth highest number of doctors, nurses and other medical staff diagnosed with Covid in Spain. However, the number of Covid patients in the Region’s hospitals has dropped by 16 in the past 24 hours and now stands at 610, of whom 83 are in intensive care (six more than in the previous update).
Fatalities and recoveries
Five further Covid-related deaths have been confirmed in the Region of Murcia, two of whom were under the age of 60, bringing the total death toll to 1,909. On the other hand, 6,976 people recovered from the virus in the past 24 hours – a total of 229,870 since March 2020.
Incidence rate
According to MurciaSalud, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has risen to 5,164.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants since the previous update. Meanwhile, the 7-day rate has dropped by around points, from 2,904.6 to 2,776.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
For the past few weeks, young adults in their 20s had the highest incidence rate but now teenagers aged between 13 and 19 have the highest 14-day and 7-day rates, with 6,855.3 and 3,650.4 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively.
