ARCHIVED - Orihuela Palm Grove opens new visitor area
Almost €50,000 has been spent creating a new recreation area in Orihuela, in the Vega Baja comarca, Alicante province.
A new picnic area with amphitheatre has been unveiled at the popular El Palmeral de Orihuela (Orihuela Palm Grove) next to the Interpretation Centre.
The €47,720 visitors' area on an 800 m² plot has been created to "allow residents of Orihuela and the entire Vega Baja to enjoy and relax in this privileged environment in the open air".
The project is part of Integrated Sustainable Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI), and has been co-financed (50 per cent) by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Operational Program for Sustainable Growth, 2014-2020.
The municipality has been awarded close to €2 million worth of investment from the fund, €1.2 million of which will be ploughed in El Palmeral de Orihuela over the next four years.
Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest, the Orihuela Palm Grove is the second largest in Europe boasting 9,000 trees, behind El Palmeral de Elche, 36 km away in the Baix Vinalopó comarca of Alicante province.
Its crescent shape is conditioned by its location, sheltered by the Sierra de Orihuela to the north, the mountain of San Miguel to the south and the Oriolet to the west.
Orihuela Palm Grove has an interesting agricultural system of intensive irrigation of Islamic origin with palms located along the perimeters of terraces, roads and irrigation channels, and visitors can enjoy the natural environment through different trails and routes.
