Orihuela launches series of free tourist tours for May
The routes will focus on Orihuela's natural and artistic heritage, and the works of 18th century artist Fransisco Salzillo

Orihuela's Department of Tourism has put together a packed programme of guided tours for May aimed "at visitors, but also at local people who want to get to know the municipality better".
The town experienced a welcome influx of tourists over the May bank holiday long weekend, and hotel and holiday flats recorded an average 80% occupancy rate. According to Councillor for Tourism, María García, this led to a "surge in people visiting the tourist offices" to find out more about what to do and where to go in Orihuela.
"Orhuela is a destination to enjoy all year round," she said at the unveiling of the May tourist tour programme this week.
"We have programmed a varied programme with some novelties that we hope people will enjoy."
The tours are free and anybody interested in taking part can book a place here.
The tours are as follows:
Friday May 5, 6.30pm: A route along the Segura River that will depart from the Plaza del Carmen.
Saturday May 13, 12 noon: 'Art through the churches'. This tour will explain in detail all the works in church facades or niches that often go unnoticed.
Saturday May 13, 6pm: Get back to nature with a tour of the Palm Grove that will meet at the site's interpretation centre.
Sunday May 14, 10am: A walk through the murals of San Isidro that will include a poetry recital by the Orihuela Social Forum.
Saturday May 20, 10.30am: One of the most popular tours among visitors to Orihuela, the 'Cultural Walk' that explores the municipality's heritage.
Saturday May 27, 10am: 'A walk with Salzillo', an 18th Century artist famous for his religious sculptor. This walk aims to highlight Orihuela's Holy Week, declared of International Tourist Interest.
Saturday May 27, 6pm: 'Route of the Palaces'.
Sunday May 28, 6pm: Tour of 'Andalusian Legacy' that remains in Orihuela.
