ARCHIVED - Orihuela invests half a million euros in bike lanes and paths
A network for pedestrians and cyclists will be created in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province
Orihuela Council is investing 537,500 euros in a 10.5 kilometre network of bike lanes and paths for cyclists and pedestrians.
The project will connect El Escorratel and Montepinar, where a new lane was recently opened to the public, and is expected to take around six months to complete, with a view to unveiling before Easter 2022.
The network, financed through the municipality’s 20 million-euro European EDUSI funds, of which half comes from the EU and the rest from the local authority’s coffers, aims to reduce the number of cars on the roads.
“Orihuela is 90% completely flat, so bicycles can clearly play a special role in the transition to a low carbon economy,” said the local council.
In addition to new lanes and paths, the project includes the expansion of existing bike lanes at El Palmeral and Calle Victorio Oliver, which will connect with the Escorratel Social Centre areas. And asphalting works will be carried out in calles Ramón Sijé, Adolfo Clavarana and from Calle San Francisco to Plaza del Carmen.
