Orihuela Costa residents forced to clear green areas themselves as council continues to slack off
After 5 years of neglect, home owners in the Avalon urbanisation in Playa Flamenca have taken matters into their own hands
After five years of pleading with the Orihuela City Council to address the lack of maintenance and cleaning of the ramblas in their neighbourhood, the residents of the Avalon residential complex in Playa Flamenca have finally taken matters into their own hands. Fed up with the neglect and inaction of the local government, the residents sought permission from the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) to clean a section of the rambla adjacent to their homes.
The CHS, in a letter signed by the Water Commissioner, Francisco Javier García Garay, and technical engineer Marta Ruiz de la Torre, has granted the residents permission to carry out the pruning and cleaning of the urban stretch of promenade in Orihuela Costa. The decision comes as a welcome relief to the residents, who have long been concerned about the safety risks posed by the neglect of the ramblas.
The situation has never been more urgent considering the wave of fires that ha broken out in southern Spain in the last couple of weeks, which has claimed more than a dozen lives, left several people in hospital and destroyed property and land.
According to Antonio Caro, who submitted the request to the CHS on behalf of the 126 residents of the complex on Calle Niagara, the accumulation of pine needles and debris on the ramblas has created a fire hazard that threatens the safety of their homes.
"We've been praying every day that a tragedy won't occur," Caro said.
Despite the obvious risk, the City Council has failed to take action, leaving the residents to fend for themselves.
Shortly after Caro made the request to the CHS, the City Council received an aid of 66,000 euros to hire five people to clean the ravines and areas in the coastal region to prevent fires. However, this initiative has yet to produce any tangible results, leaving the residents to rely on their own efforts to mitigate the risks.
It's only fair to point out that VOX councillor Manuel Mestre has been actively trying to sort out the myriad issues plaguing Orihuela Costa residents since he came into office, but he is up against it since the previous administration failed to properly allocate the budgets.
Meanwhile, the Playa Flamenca residents have entrusted their own faithful gardener to prune and create a firebreak on the rambla. Although the cost of the intervention is still unknown, Caro estimates that it will exceed 5,000 euros, which will be borne by the neighbours themselves.
