ARCHIVED - Orihuela agrees site for new fire station
After years of searching, a new site has finally been approved for the new fire station in the Vega Baja comarca, Alicante province.
Orihuela Council has agreed to sign over a plot of municipal land close to Montepinar urbanisation and next to the Rambla de Abanilla on which a new fire station will be built.
Orihuela Fire Station has been located in the San Anton neighbourhood for almost 40 years, but the site has become "obsolete and small", evidenced during the Dana storm in 2019 when the fact it is situated next to El Palmeral significantly hindered the work of firefighters during the floods.
After years of trying to agree a suitable relocation site, a plot of undeveloped land, where the construction of multi-family housing or "unhealthy or harmful industry is not allowed", but buildings and facilities of "public utility or social interest" are, will finally be signed over to the Alicante Provincial Firefighters Consortium.
The conditions are that the fire station must be in operation within a maximum period of five years and will have to be operational for at least the next three decades.
The 32,602 m2 plot is a few meters away from the CV-930, the ring road that connects Orihuela with the A-7.
