ARCHIVED - Operation Frio reaches more than 100 homeless people in Murcia city
The initiative was launched in Murcia at the end of last year to provide support and care to people living on the streets

The Mobile Emergency and Social Care Service of Murcia City Council (SEMAS) has provided support and assistance to 113 homeless people since the start of ‘Operación Frío’ (Operation Cold) at the end of November last year.
The Region was hit with a particularly cold snap and significant drop in temperatures mid-January, which led to an increase in the demand for social care on the streets, and so Murcia City Council’s Mobile Emergency and Social Care Service was reinforced with volunteers from Civil Protection.
As a result, in the last fortnight, the SEMAS team has visited areas across the city typically frequented by homeless people, including Puente Tocinos, La Albatalía, as well as the neighbourhoods of Carmen, Paseo Marqués de Corvera and the train and bus station to name a few areas.

And between January 24 and 30, 13 men and three women, from Spain, Morocco, Romania and the Ukraine, were provided with hot drinks, blankets, warm clothes and sleeping bags, and referred to emergency accommodation set up at the Jesús Abandonado Reception Centre.
Similarly, during the first week of February, the SEMAS team provided care to a further six men and one woman: Spanish, Moroccan and Algerian.
The service teams are made up of social workers and Local Police officers who are on permanent alert, according to Murcia City Town Hall, “especially when temperatures drop below 6ºC, providing an exhaustive service of care and company.”
They are also responsible for providing information on the different social resources available to homeless people, establishing personal and direct contact that allows them to get to know each person’s situation and to provide the appropriate assistance.
“Depending on the specific circumstances of the homeless person, the service can refer them to emergency accommodation or hospital centres if necessary, as well as carrying out a follow-up.”
