ARCHIVED - One thousand beach monitors will safeguard Costa Blanca coastline this summer
They will ensure Covid compliance at popular tourist destinations in Alicante, Valencia and Castellon provinces.
More than €4.5 million will be spent recruiting 1,000 beach monitors who will ensure compliance with anti-Covid measures, provide tourist information and help prevent drownings on the coastline in the Valencia region this summer.
The aim of the campaign is to "create maximum safety on the beaches" which it's hoped will attract British holidaymakers and reactivate tourism this summer.
The region on the Coast Blanca is a hugely popular holiday destination with resorts like Benidorm and Torrevieja attracting millions of Brits each year.
And the three provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellon are home to 71 beaches, of which 20 are in Alicante.
The number of beach monitors per municipality will depend on the length of the coastline, the number of hotel beds available and the rescue services already offered, but there will be a minimum of two per town.
From June 1 to September 30, they will control access and beach capacity, ensuring compliance with measures to combat the spread of Covid.
The monitors will also offer tourist advice and guidance to beach users and will work alongside the rescue services and local police to alert them in the event of an emergency.
Beaches across the Costa Blanca are being prepared for the expected return of tourists as travel restrictions are relaxed and the number of flights to and from UK airports is increased significantly.
Travellers are still being warned against flying to Spain by the UK government, and the country will remain on its amber list until at least June 7.
