October 7 Free guided visit to the prehistoric rock art of Abrigos del Pozo in Calasparra
The World Heritage Site in Calasparra was inhabited by early humans many thousands of years ago
You might not be aware of it but October 9 is International Prehistoric Rock Art Day, and to commemorate the date a free visit is being held on Saturday October 7 to the paintings found in Abrigos del Pozo, in the Canyon of Almadenes in the municipality of Calasparra.
This site is on the north-eastern slopes of the Sierra del Molino on the right bank of the River Segura, and it is known to have been inhabited for thousands of years by early humans due to the variety of the artwork they left on the rock walls. The location has been declared a World Heritage Site to by UNESCO.
The tour begins at the BP petrol station of Calasparra at 10.00 with participants using their own vehicles, and after it ends visits to other local sites such as the Santuario Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza and the la Cueva del Puerto are recommended – as of course, is a meal featuring the locally grown rice in the town centre of Calasparra!
Although this activity is free of charge prior reservation is essential either by telephone on 968 745325 or through the tourist office at oficinadeturismodecalasparra@gmail.com.
