November 23 Benidorm Half Marathon expects huge British turnout
Almost half of the 6,500 entrants to this year’s Benidorm sporting event hail from the UK
We’ve hardly had a chance to catch our breath following last week’s epic patron saint festivities and the enormous fancy dress party on November 14, which saw more than 30,000 revellers take to the streets in the most outrageous and creative costumes imaginable.
But now there’s a chance to blow away some of those cobwebs as the Benidorm Half Marathon returns this Saturday November 23 with a whopping 6,500 participants, 43% of whom are from the UK (around 2,790 athletes).
In total, 26 countries will be represented at the sporting event and in addition to Spain and the UK, the race will welcome runners from Norway (73), Belgium (62), Ireland (32), Italy (27), Poland (21), the Netherlands (18), Sweden (16) and France (12).
The Benidorm Half, as it’s affectionately known, is a unique event in that it offers two difficulty levels: the traditional half marathon, which is a challenging 21 kilometres, and a gentler 10k. This year, its 40th anniversary, participants are split roughly half and half between the two.
Between the two events, 61.2% will be men and 38.8% will be women. By distance, in the case of the 21k there will be 69.3% men and 30.7% women; in the 10K there will be 52.8% men and 47.2% women.
In terms of the Spanish turnout, 46 of the country’s 52 provinces will be represented at the Benidorm Half 2024. Unsurprisingly, the largest number of athletes hail from Alicante (1,469 runners), followed by Valencia with 417 and Madrid with 314.
In addition, there will be 274 from Albacete, 180 from Murcia, 128 from Toledo, 97 from Cuenca, 68 from Ciudad Real, 59 from Castellón and 38 from Guadalajara.
