ARCHIVED - November 17: More than 30,000 Brits expected to take part in Benidorm Fancy Dress Party 2022
Around 50 additional officers are being drafted in to police the party in the popular Costa Blanca resort on November 17
This year's Benidorm Fancy Dress Party looks set to the biggest and best yet, with more than 30,000 Brits expected to fill the streets of Rincon de Loix on November 17 to celebrate the event's 25th anniversary.
The party traditionally attracts tens of thousands of people, but following a two year hiatus due to the pandemic, and the fact the event marks a quarter of a century, attendee numbers could well be higher this year. And an additional 50 National and Local Police officers are being drafted in to ensure a "safe party".
A special press conference was held on Tuesday November 8 attended by the organiser and pioneer of Benidorm Fancy Dress Party, businessman Manuel Nieto, and Town Hall representatives, including Councillor for Events, Jesús Carrobles, and Councillor for Public Safety, Lorenzo Martínez
During the presentation, Carrobles said: "This celebration has become an integral part of Benidorm and it's estimated that more than 30,000 people in costume will gather in the streets of the Rincón de Loix which will bring a great touch of colour to the town.
"We are delighted to welcome all those who come and participate in this festival, which keeps growing every year," he added.
The event was "created from nothing", explained organiser Nieto, and in a very short time "it evolved by itself, with the involvement of more and more people".
"Every year the number of activities increases, such as parades, the distribution of T-shirts, more decorations, giant paellas, and barbecues, etc. Benidorm has become a reference in terms of costume parties for British tourism, around 9,000 people who come to the town exclusively for this event," said Nieto.
Meanwhile, assuring that "the number of officers will be proportionate and adequate to the number of people who will congregate in the streets", the Councillor for Public Safety warned there will be road closures and traffic diversions during the party which will be made public in advance.
The actual fancy dress parade is expected to start at 4pm, although this has still to be officially confirmed, with up to 18 floats, music and shows.
