ARCHIVED - No additional restrictions for Valencian Community despite rising infections
The incidence rate in Valencia has risen to 1,692 cases per 100,000 inhabitants
The president of the Valencian Community, Ximo Puig, has this week ruled out imposing any further restrictions despite the skyrocketing number of Covid infections, with the region experiencing the most cases of the entire pandemic over the New Year’s Eve weekend. Many feared that the regional leader would ramp up control measures after the celebration of the Three Kings on January 6, but instead, Mr Puig has insisted that we must address the health crisis “in another way”.
The president acknowledged that the rising incidence rate, which on January 4 stood at 1,692 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, is a concern but that the situation is very different to a year ago “thanks to vaccination”. For this reason, he sees no need “in principle” to implement any further measures.
For the moment, a Covid passport showing double vaccination, a recent test or recovery from the disease is required to access the indoors of bars and restaurants, gyms, swimming pools and cinemas, as well as hospitals. As with the rest of Spain, a mask is mandatory both outdoors and indoors.
The Omicron variant caused an explosion of infections over the holiday, with the figures widely surpassing those registered during the same period last year. According to the Ministry of Health, a year ago there were ten times fewer Covid infections and less than half the hospital numbers, while 80% fewer people lost their lives.
Nevertheless, the president has expressed his wish for a “certain normalisation” of social and economic life and has once again called for “the utmost prudence” in the face of the high number of infections in this sixth wave.
In addition, Mr Puig has defended his decision to allow schools to reopen as normal after the Christmas break, stressing that the educational community has thus far demonstrated its ability to cope with the pandemic and avoid Covid outbreaks in the classrooms.
