New train station to be built in Totana
Totana will get nearly 10 million euros for its new station
The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has tendered a contract for 9.4 million euros, through railways infrastructure management company Adif, for the construction of a new railway station in the town of Totana.
The aim is to give a boost to the Murcia Cercanías service and move a step further in the development of the Murcia-Almería high-speed line, a strategic axis of the Mediterranean Corridor that connects the Region of Murcia with the rest of Europe.
The announcement comes just a day after the Regional government agreed to pump over 40 million euros into improving high-speed rail infrastructure in Murcia, including 800,000 euros for the long-term project of bringing the AVE to Cartagena.
Totana’s new station will have a building for passengers and two platforms. It will be accessible for people with reduced mobility and is apparently designed with sustainability in mind, being integrated into the local environment, according to the Government Delegation in the Region.
It will be built barely 500 metres from the current train station, next to the section of the high-speed line that runs through the town. Work to be undertaken includes the construction of the lobby and waiting area for passengers, access turnstiles, a ticket sales area, a shop, toilets and technical rooms.
One nice feature of the new station is that it will have a large green area around it and there will apparently be very good links to other public transport.
They are going to build a new road with a cycle lane in both directions to access the station and, on the esplanade in front of the main entrance, a car park with 78 parking spaces – almost double the size of the car park at the current train station.
