ARCHIVED - New parking meters in Murcia city require vehicle matriculation number
The “next generation” parking meters limit the time permitted in a given parking space
Urbanusa, which manages the municipal car parking areas in Murcia city, is undertaking a gradual programme to replace the old-style parking meters with the latest “new generation” technology, the net result being a number of changes for consumers and an economic saving for the municipal council.
The company is aiming to substitute 146 meters during September and the council has opted to purchase converter kits which enable the operator to continue using the existing machines for as long as possible, but convert existing equipment into next-generation parking meters, saving 60 percent compared to the cost of purchasing completely new machines.
The most immediately obvious difference for users is that the vehicle license plate number must be entered when purchasing a ticket and users may not park in the same place in the area for more than two hours and thirty minutes.
The council explains that’s its objective is to apply the municipal ordinance regarding vehicle rotation, and ensure that the maximum number of free parking spaces is made available for users, rather than permitting the same vehicle to occupy a space for a longer period, the overall aim being to deter private vehicle owners from bringing vehicles into the city and occupying the same space all day.
The new smart parking meters also have new functionalities such as contactless payment by bank card or a facility to create a “contactless wallet” which is associated with the vehicle's license plate, enabling drivers to accumulate a virtual balance.
This gives credit for time which has not been used, so if a driver removes the vehicle before the time period paid for has concluded, an amount of credit is generated against the specific vehicle registration, which can be used on a susequent occasion, so drivers only pay for the time they actually use.
In the future additional functions will be added into the service, such as information about where parking spaces are available in the ORA areas should a driver indicate that a space is being sought, as well as linking the payments system into the municipal underground car parks, so that credit can be “spent” in other car parks managed by the municipality, as at the moment the Blue ORA street parking areas and the underground parking systems are not integrated.
