New park and ride opens in Lorca

The 1,800 square metre car park can hold 70 vehicles
Shortly after midday on Saturday January 4,
Lorca’s newest park-and-ride facility, located between the Alamedas de Ramón y Cajal and de la Constitución, threw open its gates. The 1,800 square metre car park was completed in record time and has capacity for 70 vehicles, which should ease the pressure while the railway tracks are being buried.
Since it opened, the car park has been free but customers will have to start paying for the facilities from Wednesday January 8, when the ORA resumes services after the holidays.
“The main reason is to allow greater mobility and guarantee the rotation of vehicles, which will benefit commerce and hospitality, since the centre has a serious parking shortage caused by the works on the Ave,” said the Councillor for Local Development, Rosa María Medina Mínguez.
Pedestrians will be able to access the car park via the Alameda de Ramón y Cajal and the Alameda de la Constitución, while cars can enter through Alameda de Ramón y Cajal only.
This project represents a municipal investment of 10,900 euros.
The work included relocating metal fencing, demolishing a wall to widen access from the Alameda de Ramón y Cajal, clearing and cleaning the site and laying down a 10-centimetre layer of soil and 4-centimetre gravel.
The land for the parking facility has been temporarily provided by its owners and is part of a development plan for the Alameda de la Constitución area, where 100 homes are slated to be built in the future.
The Traffic Councillor has insisted on the need for this car park: “The works on the Ave have eliminated a large parking area that was a few metres from this space, which is causing many problems for commerce and hospitality. The Town Council has made a great effort to create this new car park and continues to search for new spaces that can alleviate the deficit caused by the burying of the railway line in the urban area.”
