There is no shortage of DGT cameras on Spanish roads, ranging from devices that allow authorities to check up on traffic jams and accidents to those that can detect mobile phone or seatbelt use. Now, in the latest proposal on Road Safety, the Congress of Deputies has proposed a new use for the cameras: to impose fines on 32% of drivers.

 

According to the latest report from the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), some 32% of vehicles circulating on roads in Spain do not display a current ITV. Akin to the MOT in the UK, the Inspección Técnica de Vehiculos (ITV) is a test that determines the roadworthiness of a vehicle. Unlike its British equivalent, the frequency of the ITV depends largely on the age of the car, with those under four years not requiring the inspection.

 

The latest proposal aims to take advantage of the large number of cameras throughout Spain to target all drivers without an ITV. Guillermo Magaz, director of the DGT, has suggested using the devices to verify the validity of the labels that must be displayed on all vehicles, thus drastically reducing the number of illegal cars on the road.
