ARCHIVED - New cutting-edge national tourism centre will be based in Benidorm
The coastal resort in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province, will host the modern centre specialising in the digitisation of tourism in Spain
Benidorm will be the headquarters of the new intelligent platform of tourist destinations (Plataforma Inteligente de Destinos), a cutting-edge project which is at the centre of the country's 'Spain Can Recover' Plan.
The move, announced by Spain's President, Pedro Sánchez, and regional president, Ximo Puig, after meeting with industry representatives in Benidorm on Sunday, cements the coastal town as "Spain's main tourist destination".
The project will involve an investment of more than 130 million euros, which will be used to develop smart tourism programs for the entire Spanish tourism sector, meaning Benidorm and Alicante province in general will become a benchmark for the whole of Spain in the application of new tourism technologies.
The smart destination platform is a tool that will combine public and private data with the aim of digitally connecting destinations, tourists and businesses, as well as improving the competitiveness of the sector.
The HQ technical team will be based at the Invat-tur facilities and there are plans to create a new tourism centre on the site, "thus forming a campus of tourism innovation in Benidorm", explained Puig.
"The Smart Platform will promote the development of new services based on data provided by tourists and the sector. This will increase the sustainability of all tourist destinations and personalise the experience to the visitors themselves," he added.
Ironically, in order to make the announcement about sustainable travel, President Sánchez used a gas-guzzling private helicopter and private jet, both of which returned empty to base after dropping him off.
