Mysterious Spanish mansion offered at auction for free

The buyer of this historic property in Galicia, northern Spain, will pay nothing but admin fees and a small debt

Tucked away in the charming town of Xuvia lies a mansion shrouded in mystery and intrigue. The Casa de San Román, located in the Galician province of A Coruña, once a grand testament to the region's rich history, now stands as a symbol of neglect and abandonment.

Despite its beauty, this enigmatic estate has been left to gather dust, its secrets and stories slowly fading away.

The mansion's history is as fascinating as it is complex. Built by the renowned hydrographer Claudio Montero Gay in the 19th century, the house was once a treasure trove of exotic artefacts and curiosities. A stuffed crocodile, wooden birdhouses and even a replica of the world's largest diamond, the Ko-i-Noor, were just a few of the treasures that adorned its walls.

However, as the years went by, the mansion fell into disrepair, and many of its valuable possessions were looted or lost.

Today, the Casa de San Román stands as a shadow of its former self, its grandeur and beauty slowly being consumed by the passing of time.

Although it’s in a state of total disrepair, the mansion still boasts an impressive floor area of 722 square metres, set on a sprawling 4,700-metre plot.

As the auction house prepares to sell the property for the third time in recent months, the starting price has been dramatically reduced to zero euros. The current owner, eager to offload the property, is open to any reasonable offer.

But, it’s a classic case of buyer beware as the new proprietor will need to be prepared to take on the significant costs of renovation, estimated to be in the region of two million euros.

Even with these challenges, the Casa de San Román remains an irresistible gem, waiting to be rediscovered and restored. Entrepreneurs and hospitality companies have shown interest in the property, but the high cost of renovation has deterred them.

The auction, running at Court number 2 of A Coruña, ends on November 28. The buyer will only need to pay an outstanding debt of 15,665.09 euros, as well as a premium of 60.50 euros to the auction house.

It's a daunting task, but for the right buyer, the Casa de San Román could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own a piece of history.
