ARCHIVED - Murcia will go without giant Christmas tree this year
Murcia council named the increase in Covid cases as the main reason for the decision
Despite having previously promised that the giant Christmas tree was going to be placed in the Plaza Circular as it is every year, Murcia city council has announced this week that there will be no tree this festive season.
Representatives explained their decision citing the large increase in coronavirus cases both in the municipality and in the Region, stating that the “responsible” thing to do would be to not place the tree this year to avoid crowds gathering in the Plaza Circular. Of course, the fact that the council had yet to contract anyone for the installation of the emblematic tree has also played a big part in the decision.
Instead, the council has promised to erect smaller Christmas trees in several points throughout the municipality, to spread the Christmas cheer to other parts of the city and its outlying districts.
In addition, the city council has announced their intention to donate the thousands of euros that would have been spent on the giant tree to those in need in the municipality of Murcia.
The city council has also committed to placing 700 Christmas trees in the municipality's shops, to draw in more customers during the holiday season.
