Murcia swimming pools face calls for closure this summer
A consumer rights organisation in Murcia has called for authorities to ban filling private swimming pools to mitigate the drought

The lack of regular rainfall this winter and spring has at times this year led to reservoirs and water reserves being lower than usual, prompting fears of hosepipe bans and other drought restrictions.
Some areas of Spain have had water restrictions in place already, including Andalucía where there was, for a time, a ban in place on filling up private swimming pools using water that is safe for human consumption. That has since been lifted.
Now, in the Region of Murcia, the Association of Consumers and Users (CONSUMUR) has urged public administrations to implement a similar ban the filling of private, single-family swimming pools as a measure to combat the drought.
According to recent figures, the drought has caused agricultural losses of more than 289 million euros in the region and the consumer rights organisation considers the proliferation of private pools in areas severely affected by the lack of water to be inconsistent, and stresses the need for restrictive measures similar to those implemented in Catalonia and Andalucía.
With more than 50,000 private pools across Murcia, it is the autonomous community with the third highest concentration of pools in proportion to its population.
In addition, CONSUMER has proposed that single-family swimming pools reuse water, and recommends that use of community and public swimming pools instead.
