ARCHIVED - Murcia man and Alicante woman die canyoning in Granada
The mountaineers' bodies were discovered in the Trevélez River, known as a 'black spot' in La Alpujarra, Granada

A vet from Murcia and a woman from Alicante have died while canyoning in a renowned 'black spot' in Granada.
The body of Esteban B., a well-known veterinary surgeon specialising in traumatology who worked at the Clínica La Paz in El Palmar and lived in the Murcia district of Sangonera la Verde, along with that of his female companion who has not been identified, were discovered in a pool next to the Trevélez River in La Alpujarra hours after they were reported missing.
The mountaineers, aged between 40 and 50-years-old, had been canyoning in the vicinity of the so-called 'puente de palo', considered by specialists from the Guardia Civil's Mountain Rescue and Intervention Service (Sereim) as a "black spot" in the area due to the number of people who have lost their lives in the area.
Their exact cause of death is unknown as yet, and an investigation has been opened.
Police sources confirmed that someone known to the deceased raised the alarm on Sunday evening, June 19, reporting that a relative had gone mountaineering and canyoning in the area that morning and had not returned.
A search operation involving Guardia Civil specialists, firefighters and a rescue helicopter was activated but proved tricky due to the fact "the water level in the dangerous Trevélez ravine is very high at the moment".
Tragically, the lifeless bodies of the two mountaineers were discovered at around 3pm on Monday June 20.
