ARCHIVED - Murcia introduces brown food bins to encourage recycling
The goal is for every neighbourhood in Murcia to have the recycling containers by 2022
A VALUEWASTE pilot recycling plant has been inaugurated in Murcia city this week that aims to repurpose 1,800 tonnes of organic waste into 60,000 kilos of protein flour for animal and human food and fertiliser every year. The new base, located in Cañada Hermosa, is already operating at full capacity.
Brown bins designed to collect food waste are already regularly being collected from the Barrio de La Flota, the weekly La Fama market and the districts of La Alberca and El Palmar, and it is anticipated that these containers will become operational in all districts of the municipality in 2022.
In addition to raising awareness in Murcia about the importance of recycling, the project aims to reduce the emission of C02 by 540 tonnes per year. Mayor José Antonio Serrano explained that “we need the transition to a circular economy with systems that allow us to give new value to urban waste, obtaining products of benefit to society.”
Mr Serrano added that “we will promote and include the principles of circularity in all our activity, as well as in our plans and regulations in order to reduce the use of resources, avoid waste, promote good practices, repair rather than discard, share in instead of owning.”
Funded by the European Commission, the VALUEWASTE project focuses on using urban organic waste from homes, restaurants and suppliers to create high-value products that will benefit the economy and the environment. Currently, the program is operating in Murcia and Kalundborg in Denmark.
