Murcia drink driver who caused accident sent to prison
The worst affected victim of the crash was a regional politician
A young man who caused a serious accident by driving the wrong way down the A-30 motorway between Murcia and Cartagena on Tuesday October 22 has been sent to prison.
The driver, who tested positive for both drugs and alcohol, is being held due to a perceived risk by the court of him fleeing.
The accident left PSOE deputy Miguel Ángel Ortega seriously injured, and he is currently recovering at the Virgen de La Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia.
The Court of Instruction Number 8 in Murcia has charged the driver with three offences: driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs; reckless injury; and driving with disregard for the lives of others. The magistrate justified the detention partly on the grounds of the young man’s flight risk.
The Guardia Civil de Tráfico is investigating the incident, which occurred around 9.10am on Tuesday. Ortega’s vehicle was struck while he was on his way to a Regional Assembly session. Following the collision, the deputy underwent surgery, where he had to have his spleen removed due to internal injuries.
