ARCHIVED - Murcia Covid update October 17: cumulative incidence rate on the rise
The increase in the Region of Murcia has been attributed to a residential home outbreak in San Javier over the weekend
After coronavirus cases in the Region of Murcia experienced an unexpected resurgence over the weekend, the latest data released by the regional health authorities on Sunday October 17 shows that the situation has stabilised somewhat, with 29 new cases reported in the past 24 hours, 16 more than on the same day last week.
Of the 29 new positives, five correspond to the municipality of Cartagena, four to Murcia, three to San Javier and three to San Pedro del Pinatar. The rest are distributed throughout the other municipalities. Since last Thursday, the number of active cases has increased by 36, to 615.
This is still a vast improvement on Saturday, however, when 93 positive cases were reported, due in no small part to a Covid outbreak in the Aidemar centre for disabled people in San Javier.
Cumulative incidence rate:
Unfortunately, the spike in new infections has led to an increase in the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in the Region since Friday’s update. The figure now stands at 51 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a significant climb from the 44.86 cases reported before the weekend.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Regional Health Minister, Juan José Pedreño, has confirmed that a 33-year-old man has died after being infected in the Covid outbreak at the residential centre in San Javier. The man suffered from underlying health conditions and died as a result of pneumonia.
This brings the total death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,746.
The latest figures show that everyone currently being treated for serious coronavirus cases in the Region’s ICUs are unvaccinated, amounting to 12 people between the ages of 19 and 79. In addition, 36 patients are being treated on wards for Covid.
Vaccination data
The most recent vaccination data, released on Friday, show that 78.45% of the population have now been fully vaccinated while 90.83% have so far received at least one dose of the jab. In all, 2,217,769 doses have been administered throughout the Region of Murcia.
