ARCHIVED - Murcia begins flu vaccine and Covid booster jab campaigns
Over-60s and under-5s are recommended to get vaccinated against flu this year, as it will be stronger than ever
The flu vaccination campaign and the fourth dose of the vaccine against Covid-19 for elderly people living in care homes begins today in Murcia.
The first people to receive the second booster dose against Covid-19, at the same time as the flu vaccine, will be the most vulnerable people in society, namely the elderly who live in care homes and the disabled, as well as social workers and healthcare professionals who work in these homes.
As the Regional Minister of Health, Juan José Pedreño, explained, the aim is to “immunise those people most at risk of complications, if they suffer from them, as well as those who can transmit it to others”.
Pedreño also stressed that “flu vaccination is the most effective preventive measure to stop the flu and its complications, after two seasons of low circulation due to hygiene and health measures against coronavirus”.
After the completion of this first stage of the dual vaccination programme, which is highly recommended by health experts, the vaccines will be offered to the general population over the age of 60 and, in the case of the flu jab, to children under the age of 5.
From October 6, the flu vaccine will be administered together with the Covid-19 booster dose to people aged 60 and over, as well as to people belonging to risk groups and priority groups, including pregnant women, essential personnel, chronically ill or at-risk people and home carers or those living with people at risk or the elderly.
Doctors, nurses and other health professionals will also be called to be vaccinated with both jab from October 6 at health centres and regular vaccination posts.
Vaccination against influenza in children will begin on November 2, specifically for children between 6 months and 5 years of age.
