Murcia and the Costa Blanca: the top choices for campers in all of Spain
Cartagena, Benidorm and Cabanes had the busiest campsites in the country at the end of last year
Given the rising cost of travel and tourist accommodation, it comes as little surprise that a huge number of holidaymakers are now choosing alternative vacations to save a few euros while still enjoying the Spanish adventure.
The figures bear this out, and in December 2023, there was a significant increase in overnight stays in campsites across Spain, with a 9.3% rise compared to the same month in 2022. This upswing was observed in both resident and non-resident stays, with a 9.4% and 9.3% increase respectively.
According to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) on Thursday February 1, the Costa Blanca emerged as the most popular tourist destination, attracting more than 349,000 overnight stays. The area also recorded the highest occupancy rate, with 82.9% of camping plots offered being booked.
Benidorm, Cartagena and Cabanes were the top three tourist spots in terms of overnight stays.
Last December, 42.4% of campsite plots were occupied, representing a 2.7% increase from the previous year. Weekend occupancy saw a notable surge, jumping 6.1% to reach 43.6%. Crucially, foreign travellers accounted for 65.6% of overnight stays, with German tourists comprising 38.6% of the total.
The Valencian Community proved to be the premier camping destination, recording around 685,000 overnight stays and a 7.4% annual growth rate. It also achieved the highest level of occupancy among all regions, with 64.9% of plots offered being taken up.
In the Region of Murcia, campsites welcomed 9,465 travellers in December, 55% of them foreigners.
These visitors contributed to a total of 120,002 overnight stays, positioning Murcia as the fourth most popular region in terms of volume.
