ARCHIVED - Mummified body of missing man found on the roof of abandoned Alicante building
A backpack containing identification was discovered next to the corpse in a semi-constructed building in Alicante city

The mummified body and identification which corresponds to that of a 56-year-old man who disappeared in July 2019 has been found on the roof of an abandoned, semi-constructed building in Alicante.
The grisly discovery was made by a local resident on Friday night, May 6, together with a backpack containing identification in the name of Julián Ortega, who was reported missing three years ago by his family. The National Police are now carrying out DNA tests to confirm whether or not the body belongs to the missing man.
According to police sources, the death appears to be from natural causes and the body was found in an area where a large police search was carried out to try to find Julián. It's also the last location registered on his mobile phone.
The corpse was found by a local man interested in the exploration of abandoned places and buildings under construction, amongst other locations, a practice known as 'urbex' at around 10.30pm. He immediately contacted police, reporting the discovery of a "charred body on the roof of an unfinished building in a state of abandonment" in Calle Ocaña at the junction of Plaza de la Luna and Avenida Neptuno.
National Police and two teams of firefighters were sent to the scene, and using a crane were able to access the top of the building were they found the "mummified but not charred body".
The corpse has since been taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine where a post mortem was performed that ruled out the possibility of a violent death.
Julián Ortega's family have been informed of the discovery and the police are now awaiting the results of the DNA tests to officially confirm the deceased is indeed the 56-year-old.
