Moroccan man arrested for raping British tourist on the Costa Blanca
The young woman was attacked more than a year ago in Pilar de la Horadada
Fifteen months after the crime was first reported, Costa Blanca police have arrested a 22-year-old man for the alleged rape of a young British holidaymaker in Pilar de la Horadada.
The suspect was handed over to the court of Orihuela and was released on conditional bail last month.
According to investigators, the horrific attack occurred on August 15 last year when the British girl was holidaying with her family. On the night of the assault, she and a friend met two young men at a well known leisure venue and at some point in the evening, the victim was left alone with one of boys and he raped her.
The men were known to the victim but she was able to present a photograph of the perpetrator’s friend when she reported the assault to police. Operation ‘Iven’ was launched and investigators were led to Logroño, in La Rioja, where they eventually tracked him down.
After more than a year of analysing evidence, police identified the alleged perpetrator of the sexual assault: a young Moroccan man who already had a record of crimes against property and who was living in Pilar de la Horadada, although he had no fixed address.
He was finally arrested on October 10, although the events have only just been made public, and has been charged with a crime of sexual assault with carnal access (rape).
