More settled weather this week: Spain forecast November 18-21

Most of the rain will be confined to northern Spain but the temperatures will fluctuate day to day

Average temperatures expected on Thursday

Following a torrential start to last week, the weather settled down considerably across Spain and in most areas it was almost spring-like at the weekend. In fact, after plenty of chilly days, the temperatures on Sunday November 17 were much higher than normal, hovering around 25ºC in the south.

According to State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) spokesperson Ruben del Campo, the week beginning November 18 should also start out nice and stable, but another cold front is due to sweep in, bringing with it yet more rain, a drop in temperature and even snowfall in high places.

Monday November 18

Thankfully, we begin the week with no weather warnings anywhere in Spain, but there’s still a good chance of heavy and persistent rain in the Canary Islands. In contrast, the day promises to be dry and bright on the mainland and in the Balearics, although a few showers could break through in western Andalucía and along the Catalan coasts.

Daytime temperatures will tend to fall generally, although the mercury will still creep up into the 20s in more southern areas like Murcia and Alicante.

Tuesday November 19

Unfortunately, the weather warnings are back on Tuesday, with yellow alerts activated in Cantabria and the Basque Country later in the afternoon for rough seas. This will be caused by periods of strong winds and gusts on the Cantabrian coasts. The western Canary Islands can again expect persistent rain and thunderstorms.

In the rest of the country, some low morning cloudiness will lift early on, giving way to lots of sunny spells.

Weak and scattered rain throughout the day around the Pyrenees could result in snow at a relatively high altitude of 2,000 metres.

Daytime temperatures will take an upswing along the Catalan and Mediterranean coasts, although the thermometers will dip inland.

Wednesday November 20

The yellow weather alerts for dangerous sea conditions remain active in the Basque Country and Cantabria, and they’ve been extended to cover Catalonia on Wednesday.

A new front is expected to enter Spain from the north, leading to cloudy and overcast skies with fairly heavy rain in most of the northern half of the country. This could spread in a weaker way to inland areas further south and even the Balearic Islands.

The mercury will make another sharp drop in the Balearics and mainland Spain, although the temperatures should rise in the Canary Islands.

Thursday November 21

While the weather alerts have been lifted for Thursday, the day is expected to be marked by the approach and deepening of a storm over the north of the country, which will leave a predominance of cloudy or overcast skies across Spain and the Balearic Islands. The rain should be confined to the north, but we could see some scattered showers in the mountains of Andalucía and the Strait of Gibraltar.

The snow fall altitude will also drop dramatically, so those in and around the Pyrenees and Cantabria could see dustings as low as 1,000-1,200 metres.

Daytime temperatures will increase again in Catalonia, Cantabria and the Canary Islands but it will be cooler everywhere else, particularly in Andalucía and the southwest in general.
