Miura 1 space rocket lifts off from Andalucia this weekend
The shuttle will be launched into space from its Spain base on Saturday October 7
After two failed attempts due to windy weather conditions and a technical glitch, the Spanish built Miura 1 rocket will be launched into space this coming weekend.
This time around, Alicante company PLD Space plans to take flight from the Médano del Loro launch base, at the 'El Arenosillo' experiment centre of the National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA) in Huelva.
Hopefully it will be third time lucky for the launch that is scheduled for 2am on Saturday October 7.
If all goes to plan, the total duration of the flight will be twelve minutes, six of which will be spent in microgravity. The shuttle will climb to 80 kilometres in height before landing in the Atlantic Ocean, where a team of specialised underwater divers and two ships will be waiting to recover the Miura 1.
Following previous disappointing delays, Ezequiel Sánchez, executive president of PDL Space, explained that "this is common in the space industry" and that "it is more important to fly safely than to fly soon".
It is hoped that the third flight attempt of the rocket will result in the collection of important data that can be used in future designs for further space exploration, and the new and improved Miura 5 launcher is already in the works.
