ARCHIVED - Mercadona trials fully electric delivery trucks in Alicante and Murcia
The supermarket has become the first in Spain to run 100% electric vehicles

In a pioneering move to reduce harmful emissions, Mercadona has become the first supermarket chain in Spain to begin using 100% electric trucks with trials starting in Murcia and Alicante this week.
Larger outfits have shied away from all-electric in the past given their relatively short battery life and the scarcity of charging points in Spain, so logistics providers Disfrimur and Acotral have joined forces with the supermarket to identify the optimum routes for the pilot project. With a base in Madrid, the eco-friendly trucks have managed to deliver supplies to a total of 6 supermarkets: one in the capital and five between Murcia and Alicante.
Each of the 44-tonne trucks can transport a load of 33 Europallets up to 300 kilometres and their use could reduce the carbon footprint by 102 tonnes each year. As an added bonus they are practically silent, so Mercadona can increase efficiency by carrying out night-time unloadings without disturbing sleeping residents.
In addition to this novel initiative, the grocery chain has also invested in its first two zero-emission trucks which have already been tested on the roads of Alicante.
“With this step, we are not only contributing, as a company, to reducing our carbon footprint and protecting the environment, but we are reinforcing our commitment to reducing the effects on the environment and promoting eco-efficiency,” Mercadona said in a statement.
