ARCHIVED - Mercadona set to open one of its largest Spanish stores in Cabo de Palos
The supermarket chain will set up shop in the new Las Dunas Cabo de Palos centre

Murcia’s favourite supermarket Mercadona has been granted the licence to open one of its biggest stores in Spain in the new Las Dunas Cabo de Palos shopping centre. The impressive venture will cost 5.2 million euros and the 4,500 square metre building should be complete within 11 months.
Cartagena residents have long been petitioning for the Las Dunas site to be put to better use and after a 20 year wait, phase one of the new shopping centre began in July with the demolition of 10,000 square metres of basement space and three old pavilions.
The second phase, which involves a dramatic renovation of the entire urbanisation, was originally scheduled for next summer but a problem with the licencing for the works could cause some delays.
The huge Mercadona supermarket will span 4,168.43 square metres on the ground floor for its main commercial area, a warehouse and unloading docks while changing rooms and bathrooms will be located upstairs in a 337m2 space. There will of course be a car park out front measuring 3,660 square metres with spaces for 90 cars (three for adapted vehicles for people with disabilities) and another car park will occupy 8,771m2 of basement with a total of 235 spaces (eight disabled parking spots).
“This license symbolises the end of the absolute blockade that this area of the municipal district has suffered for 20 years, finally, instead of esplanades and semi-ruined buildings, the urbanisation works are being carried out, the small merchants already see the end of the tunnel that has lasted more than two decades and the important chains are committed to the area and invest and create jobs,” the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Urban Planning, Ana Belén Castejón, said recently.
