ARCHIVED - Mayor condemns young adult drinking party in Caravaca de la Cruz
More than 200 people took part in a 'botellón' party at a farm in Caravaca de la Cruz and clashed with several locals.
The Mayor of Caravaca, José Francisco García, has condemned those who clashed with locals at an illegal ‘botellón’ party in the early hours of Sunday, July 11, claiming that: "I will do everything in my power to ensure that action is taken against them to the full extent of the law so this does not happen again."
More than 200 people gathered in the La Junquera area, located between the Caravaca districts of El Moralejo and Los Royos, to participate in a ‘botellón’ - an open-air gathering, mainly made up of youngsters, where alcoholic beverages are consumed - believed to be the third to take place in the area in recent months.
The party, which attracted the attention of locals as more than 150 cars gathered in the area, is made all the more troublesome because the Region of Murcia is currently suffering from Covid outbreaks among the younger population of the region.
"These actions are irresponsible because of the risk of contagion this situation entails. For months, the vast majority of society, and also the local councils with their scarce resources, have been fighting against a pandemic in which the health and lives of all are at stake", said the mayor.
Angry residents made calls to 112 but due to a poor police presence in the area, which is located on the border between the Region of Murcia and Andalucia, some locals tried to take matters into their own hands leading to clashes with party-goers.
"I am denouncing these events publicly. We will not allow this type of behaviour and we will demand that those involved be held accountable," added García.
Efforts are still being made to obtain the identities of the people involved, however, police have made progress, reportedly identifying some of the event’s organisers.
Aside from clashes with locals, the risk of contagion and the illegal nature of the gathering, the potential risk of starting forest fires is also a major concern at events like these as drinking glasses, glass bottles and cigarette butts are usually found discarded at the scene.
