ARCHIVED - May bows out with more scorching temperatures: Spain weather May 27-29
Meteorologists believe this is shaping up to be the hottest May in Spain in 60 years
The month of May has already been a scorcher in most of Spain, with last Saturday reaching some of the highest temperatures ever recorded so early in the year. In fact, the thermometers hit 30ºC in several areas for the first time in 2022 and the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) predicts that May will finish as it has started, with sunny skies and summer-like temperatures.
The mercury will rise once more over the weekend compared to recent days, but not to the lofty heights of May 21. However, on average, temperatures all across Spain will generally hover between 5 and 10ºC above normal for this time of year.
The maximum temperatures on Friday May 27 will certainly exceed 30ºC in many parts of Spain, although Cadiz, Mallorca, Menorca, Girona and A Coruna are under a yellow weather warning for high waves. The mercury will jump as high as 35ºC in Badajoz, Cordoba and Sevilla, leading Jose Antonio Maldonado, directory of Meteorology at Meteored, to believe that this could yet prove to be the hottest month of May since 1961.
Saturday May 28 will dawn clear, although the odd shower could develop in mountainous areas from noon; along with the rising temperatures, more suspended dust is forecast to blow in to the southern half of the country as the day presses on.
Inland Valencia and the Region of Murcia are expected to feel the heat, with temperatures climbing to 34ºC, while the thermometers could hit a blistering 35ºC in the valleys of the Tagus, Guadiana and Guadalquivir. The city of Cordoba will be close to 38ºC.
A yellow weather warning has been put in place in Galicia on Saturday for potentially strong winds.
The instability will return on Sunday May 29 and, although it will be slightly cloudy at dawn, stormy showers could yet develop inland, particularly around the Pyrenees.
Temperatures will rise in the southeast of the country and will drop in Catalonia, Galicia and dip slightly in southern areas, although the mercury will still be higher than normal, topping off at a boiling 39ºC in the Murcian capital.
