ARCHIVED - Masks must be worn at Moors and Christians festivals in Alicante
The Valencian Government has revealed festival restrictions ahead of Easter Week
Spain relaxed mask restrictions across the country last week, meaning face coverings are no longer required outdoors, but they are still obligatory in public indoor spaces such as bars, restaurants and supermarkets.
And on Monday February 14, the Valencian Government announced that the public will be required to wear a mask at the traditional Fallas festival and the Moors and Christians festivities across the region, as was the case last year, although capacity control has been scrapped.
After meeting with health representatives, Valencian President Ximo Puig confirmed there will be no capacity restrictions and that the only people exempt from wearing masks are those taking part in the parades and festivities – providing they maintain a safe distance from one another.
Several towns in the province of Alicante are putting the final touches to their annual Fallas and Moors and Christians festivals, albeit slightly scaled back in some cases. For example Alcoy will host its fiestas on April 21.
"The use of masks is not obligatory, but it is a recommendation," said Puig, adding: "The pandemic is still with us but I anticipate that next week the measures of the current resolution of the Ministry of Health (dated October 8 2021) on public health measures, will be updated."
If the downward trajectory continues, it's possible the government will decide on "substantial reduction of the restrictions in force".
Traditionally, the festivities include celebratory meals involving all those who take part, and this year the health department is recommending they be held outdoors under the same rules that govern the hospitality industry, with mask wearing.
