Los Alcázares promotes the Berber Raids fiestas in Albacete
The fiestas take place this year during Easter Week from 2nd to 5th April
The latest promotional initiative to raise awareness of the annual Berber Pirate Raids fiestas in Los Alcázares, which provide a welcome contrast to the solemn Semana Santa processions taking place in most other towns of the Region of Murcia every year, is being held on Saturday 14th March in the city of Albacete, capital of one of the provinces sharing a boundary with Murcia and a 2-hour drive away from the shore of the Mar Menor.
The streets of Albacete will be witnessing the “landing” of the Christian defenders and the North African raiders at 11.00 in the Museo de la Cuchillería (the city’s knife museum!), and after an official reception a colourful and noisy parade is scheduled to the Plaza de la Constitución. The city centre then becomes a showcase for the fiestas for the rest of the day, tempting the locals to plan a trip to the coast to enjoy the fun during the Easter holidays!
Among the attractions are Christian and Moorish camps and a “zoco” street market, and key events such as the Landing and the Parley will be re-enacted for the benefit of onlookers. Workshops for youngsters are also being held, along with medieval games.
To round things off, at 13.00 traditional “marinera” snacks will be served along with murciano meat pies (pasteles de carne), and at 15.30 it’s time for buns with chocolate sweets!
At this year’s fiestas as many as 200,000 visitors are expected to flock to Los Alcázares to see the street shows, markets and dramatic reenactments of the Fiestas de las Incursiones Berberiscas, visiting the huge medieval market and enjoying the local gastronomy. This journey back to the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries is becoming more and more popular with both locals and visitors as the years go by (they only started 25 years ago!), and local Councillor María José Díaz Aragón is confident that people in Albacete will jump at the chance to join in the celebrations.
