Lorca man caught using NIE of another person to take his driving theory test
The cheating Murcia man attacked police officers when they caught him in the act
The Guardia Civil in the Region of Murcia have arrested a young man for posing as someone else in order to take the driving theory test in Lorca. Similar to the UK, motorists in Spain have to pass a written exam as well as the practical to get a driving licence, and the theoretical portion is notoriously difficult.
The suspect reportedly used another person’s NIE (Foreigner Identification Document) to enter the exam hall, presumably with the view of passing the test on the real driver’s behalf.
When officials discovered the student driver wasn’t who he claimed to be, the Lorca man fled from the exam hall and attacked a police officer who tried to intercept him.
He was eventually arrested and will face charges for falsifying public documents and attacking an agent of authority.
Perhaps surprisingly, incidents such as this are far from uncommon as fraudsters come up with ingenious ways to pass the Spanish theory test. Earlier this year, the authorities caught several people trying what became known as the toupee trick.
Essentially, students would don a wig that covered their ears and hide a tiny microphone or camera underneath. They were then fed the answers to the tricky questions by an accomplice outside the building.
