Lorca is set to get a new open-air Urban Sports Centre in 2025

A new sports centre for Lorca has been presented today by the mayor, Fulgencio Gil. The centre for sports will be located on Avenida de Santa Clara on an area of ground that spans 3,898 square metres.

The Mayor stated "The Urban Sports Center (CEDU) will provide specialised spaces that did not previously exist in the city, thus responding to the demands of athletes looking for modern and safe facilities"

The new outdoor sports area will be added to the park of municipal sports facilities owned by the Lorca City Council, in a newly created green area resulting from the works of the recent central ring road.

This type of park is the first of its kind in the Region of Murcia and it will sit on a plot of land almost an acre in size, and will include strength and calisthenic circuits, as well as pump tracks for bikes.

The project has a five-month execution period. The work will begin with the preparation and adaptation of the land for the uses it will eventually fulfill. A new parkour area will have a surface area of 257 square metres, and will be built on-site with prefabricated concrete forms installed.

Moreover, the strength circuit will have an area of 392.80 square metres and will be fitted out by forming a route with a combination of equipment anchored to the ground. For the calisthenics area, the existing facility on Avenida Alcalde José Antonio Gallego López, less than two kilometres away, will be reused and moved to the new site.

Finally, a 900 square metre and 176 metre long pumptrack will be built with soil to create a design with different levels of difficulty so that it can be used by people of different ages. Furthermore, 2,153.65 square metres will be reserved for walking and resting areas.

The mayor said of the project in a statement yesterday that it "transforms an existing plot into a modern open-air sports area, improving the urban infrastructure and promoting sport and healthy leisure.”

The rich and extensive history of Lorca has left a legacy of archaeological sites, and historic buildings, around which the modern City has built its tourism industry. Amongst these are Lorca Castle, the Jewish Quarter of the castle and Synagogue, Lorca Tourist Office Plaza de España, Colegiata de San Patricio, Museo de Arqueologico Municipal, Iglesia de San Francisco, Casa Huerto Ruano, Palacio de Guevara, Iglesia de San Mateo, Pósito de los Panaderos, Convento Virgen de las Huertas, Antiguo Convento de la Merced, Iglesia del Carmen and the Teatro Guerra.

Unfortunately Lorca has also been prone to natural disaster, suffering a Gota Fría on September 28th 2012, as well as an earthquake which measured 5.3 on the Richter scale on 11th May 2011 and claimed 9 lives. Since this earthquake the city has been rebuilding, winning recognition for its Lorca, Open for Restoration initiative, which used the restoration of the city as a tourist attraction whilst it rebuilt its historical buildings, some of which are currently still not open.

Lorca Tourist Office The tourist office itself has temporarily relocated until the renovations are completed and is on Calle San Patricio near the church.

Lorca also has an area of coastline incorporating the Parque Regional de Cabo Cope - Puntas de Calnegre, in the Sierra de Almenara, which includes the beaches of, Puntas de Calnegre, Baño de las Mujeres, San Lorca Tourist Office Pedro, El Siscal, Cala Honda, Cuartel del Ciscar, Junquera, Cala de la Gruta, Cala Leña, Los Hierros, Cala Blanca and Playa Larga, although many are accessible only through agricultural exploitations.

However, in spite of its many attractions, the name of Lorca is synonymous with Easter, (Semana Santa) its biblical parades of International Tourist Interest status and famous throughout Spain. The week includes a Lorca Tourist Office series of parades in which the whites (Paso Blanco) and blues (Paso Azúl) try to outdo each other with the magnificence of their embroideries and the skill and daring of their horsemen.
