Lorca earthquake victims receive compensation 13 years after tragedy

Around 200 victims of the 2011 earthquake will receive nearly 1 million euros in aid from the government
Aid money from the Spanish government has been paid to families affected by the
2011 earthquake in Lorca, which caused massive destruction to homes, businesses and personal property in May of that year.
The Lorca earthquakes of 2011 were the largest earthquakes registered in modern history in the area and the road to securing full compensation for victims has been a long one. Now, a total of 900,000 euros is being delivered to the nearly 200 victims of the earthquake.
Standing in front of the monument to honour the victims of the earthquake, which stands in the neighbourhood of La Viña, one of the worst affected by the quake, Town Mayor Fulgencio Gil said, “For this Government team it was essential to finally respond to this request, dating back more than 13 years, by the families affected by the 2011 earthquakes, aid that the State of the Nation owed and that, thanks to the mediation of the City Council of Lorca and the very important and decisive work of the Autonomous Community, is finally arriving.”
At the end of last year, Lorca City Council held a meeting with the victims to unblock the situation, whereby aid money was not forthcoming.
“We have always been and will always be with the affected families, sharing their legitimate claims and, although the council had no more powers, we made available all possible tools from the municipal services to achieve closure of one of the most tragic chapters in our municipality,” said the Mayor.
Even so, there are still 236,000 euros pending to be paid, which the City Council is presenting a motion to the government to finally release.
“This closes the last chapter of the recovery of Lorca after the earthquakes,” concluded the Mayor.
