ARCHIVED - Live in Alfaz del Pi and have a pet? Make sure you have it registered, say the Town Hall...
The council aims to protect animals and promote responsible ownership in the Marina Baixa town, Alicante province
Alfaz del Pi Town Council has launched a new campaign to establish an up-to-date Municipal Animal Census while raising awareness about responsible pet ownership.
The 'Jo també sóc de l'Alfàs' (I'm also from Alfaz) initiative is aimed at owners of dogs, cats, ferrets and other wild animals in captivity, to remind them of their obligation to register them in the animal census.
With the creation of the register, the Town Hall aims to protect animals, combat abandonment and abuse, as well as promote responsible pet ownership and raise awareness of civil behaviour in the street.
"Next Monday 16 we start the animal census campaign so that all animal owners can register their pets. They are one of the family and, as such, must be registered in the census register of our municipality," said the councillor for Health and Animal Protection, Marisa Cortés, after unveiling the campaign officially at the Espai Cultural Escoles Velles.
This gathering brought together Alfaz Mayor, Vicente Arques, along with several other councillors, local police, and representatives from the Environmental Volunteers and the APPA Animal Protection Association.
Having an updated census allows the council to implement specific campaigns, such as vaccination or deworming, and also helps to reunite pets with their owners should they get lost or injured
"The census is compulsory by law and it is up to the council to keep an up-to-date register of pets," said the councillor for animal protection, adding: "The identification of animals is an essential tool to promote responsible pet ownership, prevent loss and combat abandonment."
And the council is reminding the public that microchips and identification tags are compulsory throughout Spain.
"The microchip is like the animal's ID card and the best way of recovering it in the event of loss. In fact, the probability of finding a lost pet is 90% if it is identified and just 15% if it is not," warned Cortés.
How to register your pet
The procedure is very simple. A Municipal Animal Census application form is available on the municipal website (www.lalfas.es) or in person at Alfaz Town Hall's Department of Health and Animal Protection, located in the Centre L'Alfàs + Social.
Pet owners must then make an appointment by calling 965887328 (Ext. 3367) to proceed with the registration.
Registrations can be made from January, Monday to Friday, 8am to 2pm, and there will be a special registration session on Wednesday afternoons, from 4pm to 8pm.
The completed application form, DNI or NIE of the applicant, the animal's vaccination card, RIVIA registration document and the certificate of sterilisation and/or adoption must be provided.
Once the pet is registered, it will be given a numbered identification tag that must be attached to the collar. Owners will be provided with a cleaning kit for walks and a calendar to record vaccinations and veterinary appointments etc.
Further details are available on the council website.
