ARCHIVED - Jumilla crowned Best Cultural Town of the Year
Jumilla beat stiff competition from Archena and Aledo to win the award
Jumilla has been crowned Best Cultural Town of the Year in the first edition of the prestigious awards hosted by Prensa Iberica, whose aim it is to “make visible, care for and promote Spanish towns and their rural environments.”
The municipality had stiff competition and was up against towns like Archena and Aledo. The winning locale in each category was decided by the citizens themselves through online votes but the results weren’t announced until a grand ceremony at the Casino de Murcia on Wednesday July 27, where the mayor of Jumilla, Juana Guardiola, accepted the award.
Collecting the trophy, Ms Guardiola said that it was an honour to receive the award for Jumilla and thanked everyone who had supported the municipality with their vote. In her speech, the mayor described all the latest cultural resources that Jumilla has to offer, such as the Wine Museum, which opened in May, and the House of Music and Legacy of the Arts.
These awards recognised towns from ten more regions: Aragón, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, Córdoba, Galicia, Málaga and Zamora.
