Jumilla approves major landscape restoration project for La Estacada Botanical Garden
More than half a million euros will be invested in the municipal gardens close to Jumilla city centre
Stretching over an area of around 20,000 square metres and boasting an impressive collection of more than 150 species of ornamental plants, trees, flowers and shrubs, the Jardín Botánico de La Estacada in Jumilla is already one of the most popular gardens of its kind in the Region of Murcia.
But the stunning natural park, located just a kilometre from the bustling urban centre, has just received a cash injection of 520,661 euros which will be used to restore the landscape and boost its tourism, information and educational value.
The extensive works are part of the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan financed with Next Generation Funds and the improvements were all taken from an ideas competition held back in 2018. The long list of renovations includes improving the accessibility of the nature trails, reopening defunct facilities like the interpretation classrooms, adapting the lake for more regular use and installing efficient lighting throughout the gardens.
Jumilla City Council will also commit funds to conserve the existing vegetation and introduce new species of vine, as well as installing an irrigation system to water the plants and trees during times of drought.
In addition to the renovation of the Botanical Garden, the Tourism Plan has a number of other projects in the pipeline, including promoting sustainable mobility through the connection project between the city centre and La Estacada.
Jumilla’s Jardín Botánico de La Estacada is open all day until 6.30pm in winter, and until 8.30pm in summer.
